Short answer first: in 2026, IPS is still the right call for most people, and OLED is the upgrade you buy on purpose - for the picture, not the spec sheet. An OLED gives you perfect blacks and response times an IPS panel can't touch. An IPS panel gives you brightness, crisp text, zero burn-in worry, and a lower price. The question isn't which panel is "better." It's which set of trade-offs you actually want to live with.

OLED vs IPS: the quick verdict

Choose OLED if you mostly game, you play in a dim-to-normal room, HDR and image quality matter to you more than raw brightness, and your budget clears the €400 mark. Single-player worlds and dark scenes are where it earns the money.

Choose IPS if the same screen doubles as your work monitor, you sit in a bright room, you want the most refresh rate or resolution per euro, or you just don't want to think about static UI elements ever again. It's the safe pick, and safe isn't an insult here.

How we're comparing these

Six things decide this for a gamer: contrast, motion, brightness, burn-in, text, and price. We're weighting them the way an actual buyer does - not the way a spec sheet does. A panel that wins five categories on paper can still be the wrong buy if it loses the one that matters to how you use it. So each section below leads with who wins and why, then the caveat.

Contrast and HDR: OLED, and it isn't close

Every pixel on an OLED makes its own light and can switch fully off. Off means black - real black, not the dark grey you get when an IPS backlight leaks through a "closed" pixel. Our AOC QD-OLED rates 1,500,000:1 contrast; a typical IPS sits around 1,000:1. You feel that gap most in dark scenes and in HDR, where an IPS panel throws a faint halo around bright objects on black backgrounds (a health bar, a moon, subtitles). OLED has nothing to halo with. This is the whole reason people fall for OLED the first time they see it in a dark room.

Motion clarity: OLED on paper, but read the caveat

OLED pixels transition in about 0.03 ms. Fast IPS panels are around 1 ms - genuinely quick, but roughly 30 times slower. In practice a 240 Hz OLED can look cleaner in motion than a higher-Hz IPS because there's essentially no smearing on fast transitions. The caveat: your frame rate has to be there. A 240 Hz panel fed 90 fps is a 90 fps experience on either technology. Brightness: IPS wins the daylight test

This is OLED's honest weak spot. OLED handles small bright highlights beautifully, but push a full white screen - a spreadsheet, a bright webpage, a snow level at noon - and it dims itself to protect the panel. An IPS monitor just stays bright. If your desk faces a window and you fight glare half the day, that matters more than contrast ratio does. Burn-in: real, much smaller than the internet says

Burn-in is permanent image retention from static elements - a taskbar, a HUD, a logo - sitting in one spot for hundreds of hours. It's the reason OLED still scares people. Here's the honest 2026 picture: modern panels ship with pixel-shifting, logo dimming, and automatic refresh cycles, and accelerated tests generally push mixed-use panels past 10,000 hours before permanent marks show. One long real-world test on a 32-inch OLED logged over 3,000 hours of mixed use with only faint artifacts. If you game, watch, and switch tasks - and you auto-hide the taskbar and don't run max brightness all day - the risk is small and multi-year. Text and work use: IPS, by the subpixel

QD-OLED uses a triangular subpixel layout instead of the standard vertical RGB stripe. On graphics and games you'll never notice. On small black text against white - reading code, editing docs - you can catch faint colour fringing on letter edges. It's minor, and it's improving, but if you stare at text eight hours a day an IPS panel is simply the crisper tool. This is the single best argument for IPS as an all-day monitor.

Price: IPS, at every tier

Where does VA fit in?

Worth a mention, because it's the honest middle. VA panels give you deep blacks - not OLED-perfect, but far better than IPS - at IPS-like prices, which is why they show up on immersive curved and ultrawide screens. The trade is slower dark-to-dark transitions, so fast motion in dark scenes can smear.
